Brassinosteroids : A New Class of Plant Hormones by V. A. Khripach, et al

Academic Press Inc Hardcover

Reviews
Synopsis
Plants possess the ability to biosynthesize a large variety of steroids, but it was not until 1979 that a hormonal function was demonstrated in plants. About 40 structurally and functionally related steroids, known as brassinosteroids, have been isolated from natural resources. Brassinosteroids demonstrate various kinds of regulatory activities in the growth and development of plants. This book is based on a 1990 Russian monograph, but includes all important subsequent literature and developments, including unpublished data from the authors' laboratories.

Synopsis
Plant hormones play a crucial role in controlling the way in which plants grow and develop. While metabolism provides the power and building blocks for plant life, it is the hormones that regulate the speed of growth of the individual parts and integrate them to produce the form that we recognize as a plant. In addition, hormones play a governing role in the process of reproduction.

Synopsis
Since its isolation over half a century ago, gibberellin has been recognized as one of the most important classes of plant hormones. 79 free gibberellins and more than 10 conjugates have been chemically characterized as naturally occurring, and advances in technology and methodology promise to elucidate even further the intricate action of this ubiquitous plant hormone. Gibberellin displays organ specificity and photosynthetic sensitivity, and it plays an intrinsic role in the mechanisms of flora differentiation, fruit and seed development, regulation of cell elongation, and growth of roots and tissues. These mechanisms are fully considered in "Gibberelins", which offers an up-to-date and comprehensive survey of this increasingly complex subject. A historical background to the initial characterization of gibberellin introduces the book and provides perspective on the most recent research, including: plant physiology and chemistry; enzymes for gibberellin biosynthesis; molecular and genetic aspects; metabolism and light effects; growth retardants that inhibit gibberellin biosynthesis; applications to crop production and flowering; and fern antheridiogens.

Synopsis
The physiology and biochemistry of abscisic acid (ABA is an area of rapidly increasing research interest. Indeed, more is now known about the molecular action of ABA than about any other plant growth regulator. This up-to-date survey of the field is therefore particularly timely. Leading experts from the USA, UK, France, Germany and Australia have contributed papers based on the following topics: quantifications of ABA; mechanisms of ABA action; ABA and plant development; biochemistry of ABA; ABA and environmental stress; ABA in gene regulation. This book is a comprehensive review of the current state of knowledge, with an emphasis on recent advances and the application of molecular techniques.

Biology and Biotechnology of the Plant Hormone Ethylene II by A. K. Kanellis(Editor), et al
Kluwer Academic Pub Hardcover

Reviews
Synopsis
There have been rapid advances in elucidating the mechanisms of ethylene perception and synthesis by plants, the signal transduction pathway, and ethylene control in transgenic plants. It is noted here that studies on ethylene have led the way in enhancing our understanding of the biosynthesis of a plant hormone at the biochemical and molecular levels, and future studies should further help in the understanding of the biochemical machinery responsible for the perception and signal transduction of this plant hormone. The purpose of the papers here is the critical assessment of the ethylene synthesis, perception and signal transduction, its role in pathogenesis and stress, its involvement in plant growth and development and, lastly, the biotechnological control of its formation and function.

Synopsiscover
Ethylene is a simple, gaseous plant hormone produced by higher plants, bacteria and fungi. Thanks to new tools that have become available in biochemistry and molecular genetics, parts of the ethylene biosynthesis, perception and signal transduction reactions have been elucidated. This knowledge has been applied to enhance the quality of a number of agronomically important crops.

Synopsis
The present volume contains the proceedings of the International Symposium on Cellular and Molecular Aspects of Biosynthesis and action of the Plant Hormone Ethylene, held in Agen, France, 1992. Since the last meetings in Israel (1984) and in Belgium (1988), ethylene physiology has gone through a period of exciting progress due to new developments in cellular and molecular biology. New methods and tools have been developed to better understand the role and functions of ethylene in fruit ripening, flower senescence, abscission, plant growth, and cell differentiation.
